The harbour lies innermost in the Bøk Fjord, and is well protected against the autumn and winter storms that occasionally rage outside the coast of Finnmark. Despite the fact that Kirkenes lies as far north as the northern coast of Alaska, there are no problems keeping the harbour ice-free all the year round. If ice should happen to build up in the harbour or in the inner parts of Bøk Fjord during exceptionally cold periods, Sør-Varanger Municipality has an icebreaker that is ready to break up whatever ice there may be. The icebreaker is also approved as a tugboat and can be requisitioned according to need. Kirkenes harbour has a total wharf frontage of 900 running metres. Of this, approximately 700 metres are concrete. The quays are owned by public authorities and private companies and have various lengths and depths. The largest quay has a length of 195 metres and a depth of 13 metres. This makes Kirkenes Harbour capable of handling ships within most categories. Substantial ground areas totalling more than 200,000 square metres are connected to the harbour. The largest ground areas are found near the municipal quays at Prestøya. There are loading facilities in the harbour that can handle ships ranging in size from 120 140,000 tons DWT. The largest ship that has called at Kirkenes Harbour is an ore ship weighing 152,000 tons DWT. This ship had a length of 308 metres. On the largest quays there are cranes that have a lifting capacity of up to 50 tons. There are also several mobile cranes with various lifting capacities. On most quays there are trucks with a lifting capacity from 6 to 10 tons. Services offered by Kirkenes Harbour During recent years, the services offered by Kirkenes Harbour have been upgraded considerably. The largest investments have been made within the ship repair sector, bunker facilities and cold storage facilities. Centrally located in the harbour is a modern ship workshop that can handle all types of repairs. The company has a large 80 x 35 metre ship hall, so repairs can be done indoors the whole year round regardless of weather conditions. There is a well-developed bunker offer for ships in Kirkenes. There are also bunker facilities in the harbour, where it is possible to buy gas oil, lubricating oil, detergents and other such items. The facilities have a capacity of up to 126 tons per hour. Except for the smallest quays, it is possible to refuel fresh water and connect to 230V/400V power supply. At the Kimek Quay it is also possible to connect to a compressed air hook-up. At Prestøya there is also a modern cold storage plant that has a capacity of 4,500 tons in blocks. The building is 2000 square metres in size and handles everything in the way of frozen products both from the sea and land. There are several shipping agents and ship chandlers in Kirkenes. These are companies that specialize in forwarding of goods and supplying of goods to ships, respectively. Pilotage requirement All foreign vessels weighing more than 500 GRT wanting to visit Kirkenes Harbour are subject to the pilotage requirement. The pilotage service in Kirkenes has two government pilots and its own pilot boat. Services outside the harbour There is a Seamans Church in Kirkenes. Most visitors are Russian sailors.
